The Seal of American Samoa draws on traditional designs, featuring the fly switch (fue) to symbolize wisdom, the staff (To'oto'o) to denote authority and the Tanoa (kava bowl) to signify service to the chief. The tapa-clothed background alludes to the artistic proficiency of the Samoan people, and April 17, 1900, the date Samoa became a U.S. territory, completes the design.
